The Balal'k
Name: Balal'k
This does not change when used to be of the Balal'k
Lifespan: 50
Rarity: A large Minority.
Language: Hiblilil.
This language is extremely difficult to understand if you are not a Balal'k. Favoured sounds are "L" which occur in almost every word and "K" which is pronounced as a click (or cluck) and "A" is by far the most popular vowel. Any Hiblilil word will more likely repeat one vowel than use two in one word. It is spoken extremely quickly and mostly uses sounds natural to poultry, which causes any species accustomed to the random clucks and squawks of birds to have extra difficulty. However, some species (like the Prim) don't find it so difficult to pick up.
When it comes to speaking other languages Balal'k usually have difficulty with other languages, so there will usually be only one or two in a group that are the communicators.
Appearance: The Balal'k are essentially a cross between a Chicken and an Archeopteryx, only more chicken-like. The shortest Balal'k are usually around five feet (152cm) high and tall females might be about seven feet (210cm) whereas the males can be as tall as ten feet (300cm) or as short as five. To give their Chicken:Archeopteryx attributes a ratio it would probably be 9:1 as they are pretty much just giant chickens with teeth and, on one join of their wing, two digits with claws on the end.
Their plumage can vary just as much as the domesticated Chickens of earth.
Allegiance: The Gobl and The Tiss'k.
The large majority of Balal'k are part of the Gobl, but they do like to travel and can be found all over the place.
The rest are part of the Tiss'k, which is essentially a sub-section of The Prim Assembly. The Tiss'k is based on Rondure, home planet of the Prim.
Availability: Free-Use
Home Planet: 'K'k
Culture:
The Balal'k are an abnormally violent species, that have a genetic reaction of "Kill it and eat it." if any living thing looks like it might threaten their peace. They have a habit of looking at a species and going "Mmm, that looks tasty." and as they are omnivores they can and will eat almost anything you put in front of them. They are also very good fighter.
-Gobl
The society of the Gobl is an extremely sexist one, with males, numbering at one male per ten females (rhoughly), being the dominant gender. One male has his 'brood' which can number from a handful to as many as the male can handle. The male can generally boss them about as much as he wants, though he will usually just leave them to do whatever they're doing. Eating is a particular cultural interest, as the male has to give permission before his brood can eat.
Males are usually very self-centred, arrogant, flippant and uncaring. They will usually just strut about and let their brood deal with things. The size of his brood is determined by a combination of two things: whether he can beat another male in a fight, and also on the kinds of decisions he makes, where he takes his brood etc. A male will often avoid conflict in most any situation with the exception of facing another male. When two males fight members of the losers brood will often move to the winners.
Females seem to be much stronger in character than males, yet are willing to be dominated by them. They love to gossip and will talk disapprovingly over anything. Often very quickly in Hiblilil. It is also the females who will deal with pretty much everything with the exception of decision making - the males job. They are also the fighters, and there have been a few very successful Balal'k fighters in the History of the Astrolus.
-Tiss'k
The Tiss'k have a more equality focused culture, where the males swoon around and are still sought after by the females, though they will rarely fight one another. Aside from that both genders are equal, though broods still exist, but only in a sort of 'social circle' kind of way. These broods can be all female, contain one male, two, three males or even, on rare occasions, be all male.
The Tiss'k are generally more progressively minded and, while the Gobl are happy to sponge off others, the Tiss'k focus largely on technological advancement.
Another interesting point about the Tiss'k is that their official language is English, as they live on Rondure amungst the Prim, where English presides.
History: To begin with the Balal'k were very much like Archeopteryx. They were a very successful species, a success that rode largely on their violence. They would attack anything that came near them which lead to them becoming the dominant species. Once they had rid themselves of any predators they had the time to gather food stores, and just sit around and do nothing. This allowed for the development of their language and culture.
After several thousand years of evolution, the Balal'k had a language, social structure and were beginning to use tools. It was around this time that they were discovered by another race and introduced to a great many other civilisations. It was discovered that their eggs could earn a hefty price, and this became the staple of the Balal'k economy. They began to adopt technologies ans systems from other races and cultures and cities were soon built on 'K'k as their civilisation grew.
However, there was a certain level of civil unrest within the Gobl, as many Balaj'k, influenced by the cultures of others, sought equality and a new way of life. Eventually this minority grew and broke off, finding a new home with the Prim on Rondure.
Today many Balal'k wander the galaxy, enjoying the comforts created by other races.
